Etruscan Butterfly Bracelet - Jewelry Design Combinations Workshop

The last class in the Contemporizing Etruscan Jewelry Workshop focuses on creating components and then organizing them into various design arrangements. Each arrangement is evaluated in terms of where on the Traditional-thru-Contemporary scale they might fall. And each is discussed in terms of the design elements and design principles learned earlier in the week. Below are some arrangements we have come up with.

Linear
Butterflies head to head and tail to tail
Cabs laid horizontal and vertical

Linear
Butterflies at odd angles
Cabs laid at diagonal

Linear
Butterflies at odd angles, but slight variation in arrangement from image above
Cabs laid at diagonal

Linear
Butterflies positioned in same direction, with vertical organization
Cabs laid vertically

Linear
Butterflies at different angels
Cabs laid vertically

Somewhat dimensional
Butterflies overlapping each other, 3 facing left, and 3 facing right
Cab centered vertically

Linear
Butterflies in same position
Cabs centered and laid horizontally

Linear
Butterflies go head to head and tail to tail
Cabs both vertical and horizontal

Linear
Butterflies angled
Cabs on diagonal

Somewhat dimensional
Butterfly and cab combined as "component"
Buttefly head overlaps cabochon
Cabochon/Butterfly simultaneously presents both horizontal and vertical position

Attempt at dimensionality
Two butteflies overlap a centered cabochon, and thus the "component" is expanded to butterfly/cab/butterfly.
Cabs positioned vertically within "component", but horizontally outside "component".

Linear, with attempt to "break the straight line"
Butterflies positioned in various directions
Cabs laid both horizontally and vertically

Linear, with an attempt to work "wider" and "broader"
Butterflies position in same direction>
Cabs arranged in horizontal line

Same as image above, except that each row of butterflies is arranged in opposite directions

Linear
Butterflies tilted slightly, but lined up in same direction
Cabs arranged in horizontal line

Linear, with attempt to break "straight line" by the positioning of the cabs
Butterflies face in both directions
Cabs arranged in more complex pattern

Linear
Butterflies positioned at angle, but arranged in same direction
No cabochons used

Linear, with attempt to break "straight line"
Butterflies arranged in alternating and staggered pattern
No cabochons used

Linear, with attemp t to break "straight line"
Butterflies arranged in more complex pattern, with a central butterfly seemingly trying to break from the pack
No cabochons used

Linear, with attempt to break the "straight line" and start to become a curvilinear line
Butterflies arranged at different angles, but all have heads up and tails down
Two cabs positioned at competing diagonal angles

Curvilinear
Butterflies arranged at different positions and angles
Cabs arranged at slightly different, though primarily vertical, angles

Curvilinear
Butterflies positioned at different angles and head/tail reference points
No cabs used

Curvilinear
Butterflies positioned at different angles and head/tail reference points
Cabs arranged at different angles

Generally linear
Attempt to break up the "straight line of cabs"
Butterflies positioned at different angles and orientations
Center with two cabs connected

Linear
Butterflies arranged at different angles, but in symmetrical arrangement
Cabs oriented along bottom of bracelet instead of center line

Same as above, except orientation of butterflies is altered

Same as above two, excpet more cabochons added along top

Linear
Alternating orientation for butterflies
No cabochons

Same as above, except one cabochon is added in center
Cabochon is surrounded by olive green beads

Same as above, except the color of the beads surrounding the cabochon is marigold

Same as above, except the color of the beads surrounding the cabochon is rose

Same as above, except the color of the beads surrounding the cabochon is purple

Linear
Head-to-head butterflies
Horizontally lined up cabochons

Circu-linear
Butterflies oriented up and down and left and right
4 cabochons laid out horizontally and one vertically

Similar to above, but center vertically-oriented butterflies are repositioned
4 cabochons laid out horizontally and one vertically

Attempt to break the "line"
Fan of butterflies anchored to cabochon
3 additional butterflies oriented differently from one another
Cabochons oriented differently from one another

Similar to above with the fan of butterflies.
Other butteflies and cabochons laide out in different arrangement

Heavy on the "cabs"
Linear
Single butterflie
Cabochons laid out in horizontal path

Linear
Some variation in orientation of butteflies, but not of cabochons

Some curvi-linear, with cabs attached to top of butterfly or bottom, to create a downward diagonal
Cabs positioned linearly

Attempt to break the "line"
Butterflies overlapped, and oriented in different directions
Cabs all oriented vertically

3-Dimensional, where top of butterfly rests on top of cabochon
One Butterfly and one cabochon are "combined" into a single component, and these butterfly/cab components are arranged linearly.

Similar to above, except that center butterfly is flat, not 3-dimensional, and not merged with a cab as a single component

Similar to above, except that flat butterfly is oriented at an angle, instead of straight up and down

3-Dimensional, yet linear
Merged butterfly/cab components arranged along a linear pathway, but alternates with top/down orientaton of butterfly
This also creates a step-up/step-down sequencing of the cabochon part of the merged components

Similar to above, but attempt to break the "line"

Linear with strong diagonal elements in the arrangement of butterflies and cabochons

Linear with some diagonal elements in the arrangement of the butterflies and cabochons

Linear
Attempt to merge two butterflies into a "single component", but seems to lose sense "butterfly".
